California Plumbing Contractor (C-36) renewal guide

A source-linked summary of supported CSLB renewal deadlines, filing methods, fees, and expired-license rules. The guide is limited to the C-36 plumbing contractor license.

Deadline and filing

Pay by the expiration date

Renewal payment is due before midnight on the license expiration date. A renewal received by CSLB after expiration is delinquent, even when the licensee intended to renew on time. Leave enough time for the selected filing method. CSLB online payment instructions. The CSLB recognizes the Plumbing Contractor (C-36) classification.

Single qualifier

A company with a single qualifier may renew online. The online transaction adds a separate 2.99% processing fee.

Multiple qualifiers

A license with multiple qualifiers uses paper renewal forms. CSLB mails the form two months before expiration.

CSLB renewal fees

Fees depend on status and ownership

The reported renewal fees are listed by license status and owner type. The online processing fee is separate from the renewal fee.

Online single-qualifier renewals add a separate 2.99% processing fee. The fee amounts above are CSLB renewal fees, not that processing charge. See CSLB instructions for completing the renewal application.

Late or expired licenses

Late receipt can interrupt licensing time

A late receipt makes the renewal delinquent, adds the applicable fee, and creates a break in licensing time. CSLB renews from the date it receives an acceptable application through the remainder of the current renewal period. An expired license may be renewed within five years after expiration; after more than five years, an original-license application is required. A written petition for retroactive renewal must reach CSLB within 90 days of expiration when the delay was beyond the licensee’s control. Work while a license is expired is unlicensed and may prompt discipline. CSLB guidance on failing to renew.
