Washington electrician credential renewal

Washington L&I sets different renewal rules for electrician certificates, master electrician certificates, electrical administrator certificates, electrical contractor licenses, and trainee certificates. This summary reflects the supplied L&I source findings dated October 22, 2026. Check the linked L&I page for your credential before acting.

Renewal and expiration depend on the credential

Electrician certificate

Renew every three years. The certificate expires on the holder’s birthdate. L&I’s findings say the renewal fee doubles after expiration. A certificate expired for more than 90 days cannot be renewed; retesting is the only option.

L&I: Electrician

Electrical administrator certificate

Renew every three years. L&I says a late fee applies if renewal is not completed by expiration or continuing-education requirements are not met; the certificate then separates from the electrical contractor.

L&I: Electrical Administrator

Electrical contractor license

This is a business license, separate from an individual electrician certificate. It renews every two years from its effective date. If it has been expired for more than 90 days, it cannot be renewed online; contact L&I.

Continuing education

Requirements vary by credential type

The findings below describe the categories reported by L&I. Confirm which one applies to your credential and check current course instructions with the agency.

Electricians, master electricians, and administrators (except telecommunications)

At least 24 hours in a three-year renewal cycle, including 8 hours of NEC code update and 4 hours of WAC rule update.

Domestic Pump and Pump and Irrigation electricians

24 hours in a three-year cycle, including at least 12 credits of plumbing or combination classes.

Electrical trainees

48 hours of basic classroom instruction in a two-year renewal cycle.
