DueWrench field guide

Plumbing renewal examples, with the source trail attached.

This guide distills the Minnesota and Washington examples in DueWrench's official-source research so owners can see which deadlines, fees, bonds and insurance details need a closer look.

Minnesota

Example 01 · Minnesota DLI

Minnesota renewal examples

Minnesota’s Department of Labor and Industry identifies iMS as its online application and renewal system. The reported figures below are separated by credential class.

Plumbing contractor license

The reported expiration date is December 31 of odd-numbered years, with a $188 renewal fee. A $25,000 surety bond is required. The reported insurance limits are products liability of at least $50,000 per person and $100,000 per occurrence, plus $10,000 property-damage coverage.

See the Minnesota DLI plumbing contractor licensing basics page for the state's contractor-specific requirements.

Journeyworker and master plumber licenses

Both reported license types use the same December 31 of odd-numbered years expiration cycle. A journeyworker renewal is reported at $53, with a $20 late fee. A master plumber renewal is reported at $93, with a $40 late fee.

See Minnesota DLI plumbing license basics for the general plumber-license information and iMS pathway.

Unlicensed plumber registration

The reported registration expires June 30 each year and renews for a reported $19 fee. Where applicable, the Minnesota DLI iMS online application and renewal system is the identified renewal pathway.

Minnesota scope note

These figures are not interchangeable: the contractor license, individual plumber licenses and unlicensed registration have different renewal cycles and fees. The report does not establish whether separate downloadable renewal forms exist or provide a complete list of supporting documents.

Example 02 · Washington L&I

Washington renewal examples

Washington State Department of Labor & Industries publishes separate plumbing-license and contractor-registration guidance. The report keeps those scopes distinct.

Plumbing contractor license

  • Expires 24 calendar months after the day of issuance.
  • Reported renewal fee: $139.10.
  • Reported bond or assigned-savings requirement: $6,000.
  • $250,000 combined-per-occurrence liability coverage is reported, with L&I as certificate holder.
  • The insurance certificate must be filed annually before the policy expires; failure to file results in automatic suspension and reinstatement fees.
  • The report identifies reinstatement at $69.50.

For the report's mail-renewal example, review the renewal card and mail it with a check or money order and the reported payment. See Washington L&I's plumbing licensing requirements and plumbing licensing FAQ.

Contractor registration

  • Reported renewal fee: $150.20.
  • Renewal by mail uses the renewal card with a check or money order in the reported example.
  • Current surety-bond or assigned-account and general-liability information are reported as renewal requirements.
  • For renewal dates on or after July 1, 2024, the report notes $30,000 for general contractors and $15,000 for specialty contractors.
  • Completed mail applications are reported to take 3–4 weeks after receipt to process and activate.

Those July 1, 2024 bond amounts belong to the contractor-registration context; they are not a universal replacement for the separate plumbing-license example. See Washington L&I's contractor registration guidance.

Washington scope note

The report describes the renewal-card mail process, but it does not establish every available submission pathway. It also does not establish downloadable renewal forms or a complete supporting-document list. Confirm the credential, bond amount, filing status and current process directly with Washington L&I.
